How to Prepare Your Roof for Virginia’s Winter Weather (Fall 2026 Checklist)
Winter in Central Virginia can be unpredictable. One week it’s mild, the next we’re dealing with freezing rain, a few inches of snow, or those freeze-thaw cycles that do a number on roofs. If your roof isn’t ready, small issues from fall can turn into leaks, ice dams, or bigger problems once the cold sets in.
At BK Roofing & Repairs, LLC, we’ve been helping homeowners across the Richmond metro area — Midlothian, Chesterfield, Henrico, Mechanicsville, and the surrounding communities — get their roofs winter-ready for years. Here’s a practical checklist we put together based on what we actually see on local roofs every fall.
1. Clear the Gutters and Downspouts
Fall leaves love to pile up in gutters, especially with all the trees we have around here. When those gutters clog, water has nowhere to go. It backs up under the shingles or freezes into ice dams once temperatures drop.
Walk around your house and look up. If you see debris, get it cleaned out. Make sure the downspouts are clear and directing water at least a few feet away from the foundation. If you’re not comfortable on a ladder, call someone. It’s one of the simplest things you can do that makes a real difference.
2. Check for Missing, Curled, or Damaged Shingles
Virginia winters bring wind and temperature swings. Shingles that are already lifting or cracked can get worse fast. Look for any that are missing, curling at the edges, or have lost a lot of their granules (you’ll often see those black granules collecting in the gutters).
Pay special attention to the edges of the roof and around chimneys or vents. Those spots take the most abuse. If something looks off, it’s better to fix it now than deal with a leak in January.
3. Inspect the Flashing and Seals
Flashing around chimneys, skylights, vents, and valleys is where a lot of winter leaks start. The metal expands and contracts with the temperature changes, and over time the seals can fail.
From the ground you can sometimes spot gaps or rust. A closer look during a professional inspection will catch issues you can’t see from the yard. We recommend having this checked every fall, especially if your roof is more than 10–15 years old.
4. Look at Your Attic Ventilation and Insulation
Poor attic ventilation is one of the biggest contributors to ice dams. Warm air rises into the attic, melts the snow on the roof, and then that water refreezes at the colder eaves. The result is water forced under the shingles and into the house.
Make sure your attic vents aren’t blocked and that you have enough insulation to keep the attic cold. This isn’t always something you can fix yourself, but it’s worth knowing about.
5. Trim Back Overhanging Branches
Heavy snow or ice can bring down limbs. Branches that hang over or rest on the roof are a risk. Cutting them back now reduces the chance of damage during a storm and also keeps leaves and debris from collecting on the roof surface.
6. Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection
There’s only so much you can see from the ground. A proper inspection looks at the underlayment, decking condition, flashing details, and overall wear. We do these regularly for homeowners who want peace of mind before winter hits.
If we find anything that needs attention, we’ll show you exactly what it is and give you straightforward options — no pressure, no surprise upsells. That’s how we’ve always operated.
A Few Extra Tips for This Fall
- Keep an eye on the forecast. If a hard freeze or mixed precipitation is coming, make sure any temporary patches or tarps are secure.
- Don’t wait until the first snow. Once ice and snow are on the roof, repairs get harder and more expensive.
- Document the condition of your roof with a few photos. It’s helpful if you ever need to file an insurance claim later.
Winter doesn’t have to mean roof problems. A little attention now goes a long way toward keeping your home dry and protected through the colder months.
